Join us for a relaxed Sunday afternoon at Cafe Palestina where we introduce the art and tradition of Palestinian Tatreez.
Tatreez, meaning ‘embroidery’ in Arabic, is often used to refer to the Palestinian tradition of cross-stitching (also known as the ‘fallahi’ stitch) that has been practiced in Palestine and the Arab world for centuries and is an intangible part of Palestinian heritage and Palestinian women’s histories. Tatreez designs from different areas around Palestine carry a distinct symbolism and unique stories, spanning from the personal to the political.
In this 3-hour workshop (open to all) you will be introduced to the basics of cross-stitching, the history and politics of tatreez, and you will discover useful educational resources to start and expand your own tatreez practice. Materials and delicious refreshments from Café Palestina will be provided! Beginners will be shown how to start, plan and finish a small design. If you are an experienced stitcher, please join us with your own project and experience the joy of making in community!
